PARIS (AP) ? The man at the forefront of France's fight against fiscal fraud is now one of those being investigated.

Budget Minister Jerome Cahuzac has spent months singling out corporate multinational tax dodgers, citizens who live abroad to avoid taxes and those within France who stash money in overseas accounts. Now he is ensnared in just the sort of investigation he thought would help turn France's finances around, as prosecutors take a close look at an online journal's allegations that he transferred money from a Swiss account into one in Singapore.

Cahuzac, a former plastic surgeon who specialized in hair plugs, has countered with a defamation complaint against the online site Mediapart. So far his boss ? President Francois Hollande, who famously said he does not care for rich people ? has backed the man he appointed to keep France's finances in line.

It was Cahuzac who tallied just how much potential revenue France lost last week when the country's highest court threw out Hollande's plan to tax the wealthy at 75 percent. Cahuzac was the one standing before the cameras, promising to battle fiscal fraud and singling out "a certain search engine" in legal negotiations to regularize its tax situation. And he was the engineer of a 2012 campaign manifesto affirming that that "taxes are a cornerstone of our social pact."

In a statement Tuesday on his website, Cahuzac welcomed the preliminary investigation into his own finances.

It's a step, he wrote, that would show his "complete innocence of the absurd accusations."

Jean-Luc Melenchon, a leader of France's far-left party who is no fan of Cahuzac, said the budget minister should nonetheless keep his position for the time being.

"Don't judge him by his arrogant airs, his lordly pretensions or his social liberal insolence," Melenchon said.

France's economy minister and Cahuzac's superior, Pierre Moscovici, went even further on Wednesday, telling Europe 1 "we spent 2012 together and we'll spend 2013 together."

The story ? notably the back-and-forth between Mediapart and the budget minister ?is getting increasing attention in France, especially as the country's economy continues to weaken.

Mediapart has reported that Cahuzac had a secret UBS bank account until 2010, when the funds were transferred to Singapore. The site, written about Cahuzac since December, maintains a separate section devoted solely to the budget minister despite his defamation lawsuit. It includes a recording, which the site says is Cahuzac's voice, of a man talking about his secret account.

Governments across Europe have cracked down on the practice of using secret accounts to avoid taxes. Switzerland, for example, has begun helping out foreign tax offices, including revealing the identities of account holders.

In Greece, prosecutors of the nearly bankrupt nation recently asked for a new list of Greeks with Swiss bank accounts after fearing that the contents of an earlier list had been altered. Three relatives of an ex-minister were missing from the original list, court authorities have said.

The French government has also made a priority of going after wealthy citizens that the Socialist government accuses of shirking their fair share. Hollande's government has promised to reintroduce the 75 percent tax within weeks, despite the threat of losing two of the country's most prominent figures.

Gerard Depardieu, the French actor, took Russian citizenship this week. And Bernard Arnaud, the head of luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, best known as the house of Louis Vuitton, has decamped to neighboring Belgium, which has lower taxes.

Russia, U.S. to meet Syria envoy Brahimi on Friday

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian and U.S. diplomats plan to hold a meeting with the international mediator for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, on Friday in Geneva, Interfax news agency cited Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov as saying on Wednesday.

Russian and U.S. diplomats held two trilateral meetings last month with Brahimi, who is trying to find a diplomatic solution to end the nearly 22-month-old conflict between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government and its opponents.

Russia and the United States both support Brahimi's efforts to forge a peace deal based on an agreement reached by world powers in Geneva in June, which called for the creation of a transitional governing body, but they are at odds over Assad.

Russia says Assad's exit from power must not be a precondition for a political solution in Syria, where more than 60,000 have been killed since the conflict began with a government crackdown on protests in March 2011.

"A trilateral meeting with participation of Mikhail Bogdanov, (U.S. Deputy Secretary of State) William Burns and Lakhdar Brahimi is planned for January 11 in Geneva," Interfax quoted Bogdanov as saying.

Bogdanov, the Kremlin special envoy for Middle East affairs, met Burns and Brahimi in Geneva on December 9, three days after Brahimi met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Dublin.

(This version of the story corrects the title of William Burns to U.S. Deputy Secretary of State from Undersecretary of State in the fifth paragraph.)

Rudy Family Rukus~Parenting tips and humor meet in one big "rukus": Family Fun skip to main | skip to sidebar

Family Fun

In my effort to be more organized I?employed my children for some inspiration. ?In fact I turned it into a fun little FHE (family home evening) project. ?FHE is LDS (or mormon) for family time. You can read more about that here. We have a lesson, read a scripture or two, spend time together and try to bond as a family.
We discussed how to be more organized at our home. ?And then we did a one month menu plan I figure if I get children input they will eat it right?
I am excited to put it to work and we chose healthy easy meals because in my world organization and easy are basically the same thing......
We played a fun game tonight to help us learn our scriptures a little better. ?There is going to be a learning curve it isn't very easy but fun and we bonded right.
We played UNO attack last night and that was one crazy game. ?I laughed and laughed until I cried. ?Can't beat that for family fun.?

?As my kids get older we try to have as much fun as possible especially before they become teenagers because I'm pretty sure that isn't going to be very fun! ?But who knows if I keep and positive attitude and work hard to be organized it might surprise me right? ?Please say yes......

(AP) ? The State Department says Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will return to work Monday, a little over a week after she was hospitalized with a blood clot in her head.

The department on Sunday released a schedule which has Clinton meeting with assistant secretaries Monday morning. The most significant items on her agenda are meetings in Washington on Thursday and Friday with visiting Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Clinton was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Dec. 30 after doctors discovered the blood clot while following up on a concussion she suffered earlier in December. She was released Wednesday.

Clinton is expected to resign from the State Department soon. President Barack Obama has nominated Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry to replace her.

Detecting dusty clouds and stars: New radio wave technique uncovers shadows of clouds and stars in Milky Way's center

Jan. 7, 2013 ? The center of our Milky Way galaxy is a wondrous place full of huge star clusters, dust clouds, magnetic filaments and a supermassive black hole. But it can be a confusing place, too, posing challenges to astronomers trying to image these exotic features and learn more about where they are located in the galaxy.

Northwestern University's Farhad Zadeh has discovered a new tool for detecting dusty clouds and stars: simply take a picture using radio waves. He is the first to identify what he calls radio dark clouds and stars. Stars in the early and late phases of their evolution are shrouded by huge dusty envelopes in the form of dust and gas outflows.

"When you see these dark stars or clouds in radio wavelength images, it tells you something very interesting," Zadeh said. "We immediately know there is a cold gas cloud or dusty star mixing with a hot radiative medium and that an interaction is taking place. Knowing details of these clouds is important because the clouds can produce stars and also provide material for the growth of black holes."

Zadeh is a professor of physics and astronomy in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and a member of Northwestern's Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA).

Unlike in the optical, X-ray and infrared wavelengths, it is unusual to see a dark feature with radio waves. Radio is a long wavelength and therefore doesn't get absorbed easily and typically passes through whatever is in its way.

Initially Zadeh thought maybe the dark features he saw on the radio images he was studying were nothing, but then he connected the features to five known dense molecular and dusty clouds located in the center of our galaxy, some near Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the black hole.

"This technique provides very good sensitivity of faint dusty features, and it can produce images with even higher resolution than many other telescopes," Zadeh said. "It is an initial observation that tells you something is there that needs to be studied more closely."

In addition, astronomers can measure the size of dusty stars using this new technique.

Zadeh will present his results at 11:30 a.m. PST (Pacific Standard Time) Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the 221st meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Long Beach, Calif. He also will participate in a press conference on the galactic center at 12:45 p.m. PST the same day.

The interaction of a cold dust cloud with a hot radiation field results in a loss in the continuum emission and appears as a dark feature in the radio wavelength image, Zadeh said. The dark features that trace the embedded molecular clouds provide astronomers with the size of the cloud in three dimensions.

Although not part of the work he is presenting, Zadeh said a good example of a dusty cloud that could be imaged with his technique is G2, the tiny cloud that is fast approaching Sgr A*, our galaxy's black hole.

The cloud now is too close to the black hole for Zadeh to take an image, but he is looking at earlier data to see if he can locate G2 as a radio dark cloud.

"If the cloud was farther away from the black hole than it is now, we could detect it," Zadeh said.

For his study, Zadeh used Green Bank Telescope maps and Very Large Array images from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The National Science Foundation (grant AST-0807400) supported the research.

The title of Zadeh's paper, which was published Nov. 1 by the Astrophysical Journal Letters, is "Imprints of Molecular Clouds in Radio Continuum Images."

Sony announces the world's first 4K OLED TV at CES 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, no price or release in sight

4K TVs look amazing. OLED TVs look amazing. You can imagine, therefore, how good a 4K OLED TV will look. Sony has just wowed the audience here at CES 2013 with the news that it's produced the world's first Ultra High Definition television that uses Organic LEDs. Given how many companies have launched 4K sets here -- Westinghouse, Hisense, Toshiba and LG, just to name a few -- it's not unusual to hear that Sony has one-upped the crowd by adding a pinch of OLED to the mix.

The 56-inch set boasts a native 3,840 x 2,160 OLED panel, and a prototype will be on display here at CES 2013 in Las Vegas. Sony's pimping its own "oxide semiconductor TFTs" and "Super Top Emission" technologies, but isn't saying much else. There's zero mention of contrast ratio, refresh ratio, thickness, power draw, or any other specifications. Not exactly a shocker, but disheartening nonetheless. We'll be prying for more -- including any plans for a commercial release -- as the show rolls on.

Daniel Cooper contributed to this article.

Becoming a Yoga Instructor is also a possible lucrative business to work from home. This could be possible if you have the extra space available in your home, the desire to educate yourself in Yoga and of course the physical ability to do the various movements and positions.

So, How Can You Become a Yoga Instructor?

The very first step is to get certification and the ?requirements are different ?from state to state. Of course, you will need to learn yoga so you comprehend it fully. You may already have yoga experience. If not, consider to enroll in a class and begin the process to obtain as much personal knowledge as you can. Invest in some off line training from books and DVDs to boost your knowledge base.

Find a mentor to direct and coach you. Once you are certified, you can gain experience by filling in at some yoga classes. You will have the best chance you?ll have to later create a successful home based business, the more familiar and awareness you possess beforehand.

    Yoga Instructor

    ?

    What Schooling Might I need??

To become a yoga Instructor, you must complete a teacher certification program. Quite a few American yoga studios present trainer classes. Conventionally in India, yoga students ?study independently with their spiritual guide or teacher. However, in USA,?training?s?usually happen in group settings, but one on one personal sessions are also available.

The Yoga Alliance is an association that oversees a variety of teacher training schools. You can register with the Yoga Alliance to get long term yoga teacher training. The Yoga Alliance states that a 200-hour itinerary is adequate to become a yoga instructor.

    What About Liability Insurance?

You?ll want to acquire liability insurance from the start to protect yourself from possible lawsuits from your students or from teachers that may work for you as a Yoga Instructor. Be sure the insurance coverage is adequate enough to guard you in any situation. Yoga Alliance provides its members with discounted liability insurance rates.

    Where Can I Teach This?

Select a place in your home that is roomy, and ideally quiet. If you don?t have enough space indoors, converting your garage can be an option. Incorporating nature into your lesson plan with the outdoor location in your garage may work. Some type of an outdoor yoga sanctuary is the very best idea when the weather permits. Privacy is crucial so you?ll want to surround the outside area with a suitably high fence or shrubbery. Your yoga studio should have an altar, appropriate wall hangings and philosophy materials. Seems an ideal home based business being a?Yoga Instructor.

    How Do I Get Customers?

Handy Home Improvement Tips Everyone Can Use - Jordans furniture

Some think that home improvement should be left to the pros, but that just isn't true. Home improvement projects can actually be a lot of fun to complete on your own, whether you have experience or not. The key is to have some sensible advice. Read on to discover some neat tips.

Make sure you understand every single step of a project before you decide to start working on it. Sometimes something that seems very simple may actually be quite difficult. The opposite is also true at times, so be sure to make a detailed, step by step, blueprint before you start really working.

If you feel your home is too small, consider a basement renovation. In many cases, a basement can be turned into a second living room or climate-controlled storage space. If your basement has exterior access, you could even renovate it into an apartment for rental income or a mother-in-law suite for family members and other visitors.

Adding dead bolts or chains to ones doors will be a home improvement job that will strengthen ones home security and help deter people from breaking into ones home. It can also help bring one some peace of mind knowing that they are that much safer at night when their sleeping.

Sometimes home improvement is necessary for reasons beyond our control. The roof may have been damaged during a storm; the foundation may have developed a crack; or maybe the cold weather caused some pipes to freeze up and burst. Most of the time these are unexpected repairs. Check with your homeowner's insurance to see if the repair is covered.

Home improvement stores are the center of all home improvement projects. Not only do the stores sell everything you need to start a project, the staff tends to be knowledgeable and can help you if you ever get stuck. Many stores also offer classes on how to effectively improve your home yourself.

Put in a garden. It can be a lavish outside nursery, or a simple box window in the kitchen to grow your herbs. The addition of live plants and the appeal they bring to your home is unmatched. If you don't have much of a green thumb, plant strong plants that need little attention, and add a timed drip or sprinkler system for easy watering.

When a home improvement project includes landscaping working, attention should be given to drainage in order to avoid standing water anywhere on the property. Standing water looks bad, hurts grass and can even pose a health hazard if it attracts insects. Every point on a property should either be sloped for good drainage or equipped with alternative drains.

Improve your front entrance curb appeal by adding oversized house numbers and a large size light fixture. Making your entrance eye catching and appealing will increase the value of your home and the homes around you. If your neighbors like your improvements, they may try it themselves and increase the value of the whole neighborhood.

When deciding on your next home improvement project, consider updating to a luxury bathroom. Add a bathtub with massaging heads or a luxurious shower stall with high tech showerheads. Use color to give a feeling of serenity, and don't forget to go for extra size, and all the trimmings, like plush towels. There are many wonderful design shows on TV to give you fabulous ideas.

Home improvement can be enjoyable and satisfying. If you take your time and apply some of the suggestions above, you will have fun while at the same time you will be adding value to your property. It's a win-win situation!

wise self improvement | self improvement made easy: Leadership ...

?I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught.? ? Winston Churchill

Have you ever had someone decide to teach you a thing or two? How did it go? Do responses like: I tuned-out, argued back, or pretended to listen, come to mind?

Have you ever tried to teach someone else a thing or two? How did it go? Did those same responses rise up again from your pupil?

I like Churchill?s quote because he was ?ready to learn.? That?s a hunger many of us have. We want answers, solutions, and ideas.

Churchill also knew that he didn?t ?like being taught.? Most of us don?t, especially when the teaching is about something we value personally, politically, religiously, or culturally.

Too often, when we begin teach someone, we fail to notice that they have left us. Yes, they may be nodding their head in apparent agreement and attentiveness, but what they really want is for us to stop giving them our own great solutions. Deep down they want to understand their own thinking, possible solutions, and clear choices.

The challenge is create a safe space for learning. Lecturing, telling, and instructing often blocks that.

Most of us really don?t need lots of new information. We do better to get insight and revelation on what we already have stored up inside.

Solomon?s ancient proverb reads, ?The purposes of a person?s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.? (Proverbs 20:5)

Great coaching safely discovers the ?deep water? concerns and thoughts inside the CEO, supervisor, spouse, staff member, friend, or within ourselves. In my coaching work I?ve observed that ?the purposes of a person?s heart are deep waters? ? and I love seeing that insightful questions and safe listening ?draws them out.?

I?ve invested in coaching for myself over the years. The benefits for me of having a coach and being coached are:

    1. I can set my own goals. I choose what to work on and what I hope to get from the session at the beginning. My coach helps get me where I want to go.
    2. The drawing out work is done for me. My coach asks great questions that help me to discover clear answers and action steps to take.
    3. Coaching makes space for me to define ideas that have been floating around inside. When I talk it through I gain clarity.
    4. My coach doesn?t condemn. I don?t get in trouble. I do get asked good questions to help me explore.
    5. The organizing is done for me too. The coach?s job is to watch the clock and move us to the outcome. That frees me relax and express my thoughts!
    6. I leave with powerful action steps, and, knowing that I?ll talk with my coach again about those steps at the next session, I am motivated. Action steps are much easier to slough off when no one is watching. As one professional leadership coach observed, ?I could coach myself, but I invest in getting coached because I find I get my goals accomplished about three times faster that way!? I agree.
    7. Best of all, I have more hope than ever that I will actually do the things I?m called to do, designed to do, and dream of doing.

Thinking About Purchasing Real Estate? Use These Great Tips To ...

Purchasing real estate is one large step into reality for first time home buyers. The amount of money involved, as well as the expenditure of time and energy, can stress anyone out. Let the following proven real estate tips take the stress out of your own investments.

It is a good idea to retain an attorney who specializes in real estate when you are involved with foreclosure purchases. Complications can occur with pre- and regular foreclosures, so you need a legal representative to look out for your personal interests. The cost of a real estate attorney could save you from making a big mistake.

TIP! If you want a great investment in buying property, you should think about repairing and remodeling it. The value of the home will increase right away after doing this kind of work.

Never buy real estate without getting the property inspected first. Otherwise, you could find yourself in a home that needs complete renovation from the ground up when you weren?t expecting it. Not only can this cost you a lot of money, it could force you to make other living arrangements until the home is fixed.

    Perfect Area

You may have to be flexible in order to close on a home. You might not have the financial resources to buy your dream house in your dream neighborhood, but you might have enough to choose one of the two. If you can?t find the perfect house in the perfect area, look for it in an adequate area or find an adequate house in a perfect area.

TIP! The current economic climate makes now an ideal time to consider investing in real estate. Property values are currently at an all time low because of the housing market crash.

When you are looking to purchase a new house, think about your long term picture. You may be child free now, but sometimes people change their minds. So a look at the local schools can?t hurt.

Buying home insurance is a necessity for anyone buying a house. It must be done prior to moving in. Without homeowner?s insurance, your home is not protected in the event of a fire, theft, or natural disaster.

    Buying Process

TIP! As part of an offer on a prospective property, you can always request that the seller pay a portion of your closing costs or make another type of financial concession. Have your agent request that the seller buy down your interest rate for the first two years of your loan.

This approval letter can be a very beneficial component in the buying process. Also, getting approved after choosing a property can cause the buying process to drag on, which can increase your costs.

Mortgage companies typically charge a minimum down payment, and you want to be sure you can cover it in its entirety. The alternative to a proper down payment is PMI, or private mortgage insurance. This adds up to extra money you will need to pay monthly in order to show the lender you can make the mortgage payments.

    Real Estate

TIP! If money will allow, don?t purchase a home that either faces or backs up to a busy roadway. These houses tend to be a little less expensive then houses in the middle and can be tempting to purchase, however, they are less expensive for a reason.

Do you feel more confident about purchasing real estate now? Hopefully, the tips laid out here make you feel better about concern you may have. Apply the suggestions that fit your circumstances to maximize your success. Buying real estate does not have to be a difficult time. It?s exciting to own something! Make sure you consider all your options and make the right decision.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ...

    * Penny Shares are similar to any other stocks you have got to be ready to recognise the trends for profitable trading and profit. Knowledge gives power and each one knows that without it your are lost. You're going to have to invest your resources to studying about the varied penny shares to grasp when their market will change. When the market is changing down or up is the variation between turning a reasonable profit and losing money. Think about this eventuality 2 months on, that job was now simply a memory and he was spending his days speaking to ship yards about the ideal ship and catching up on everything he'd been delaying.

Then, the bull market that had been in place for some considerable time startlingly turned. Marion was checking out vacation packages. Volatility was high and even seasoned traders had to put things in place to guarantee they stayed on track. Bill lost half his trading account in a case of days. Look for a full refund guarantee because this is both an indication of good faith from the publisher and proof that they are pushing a credible programme, but also at the exact same time you can test the programme first hand before totally committing to it.

Those untroubled days were now days crammed with stress and frantic feelings. It?s straightforward enough to do because you do not have to invest any money, instead you can doublecheck the performances of the picks which it generates for you in the market to discover how well they do so you can know regardless of whether you should be making an investment in its next string of picks. It eventually and quickly topped off at $.57 at which point I took a conservative approach and got out with a decent profit of $370 on $180, thus tripling my original investment. They also are superb for more modern, less seasoned traders without the experience who are hoping to get into the market as this is an excellent example of how dynamic rational software can be. Because of this, I love to say that automated share trading systems and penny shares were made for one another. If you've been holding off on making an investment in the stockmarket as you thought it was too dangerous or the time wasn't right, there has truly never been a better time thanks to this recovery which we are beginning to enter.

Suicide car bomber kills at least 27 Iraqi pilgrims

    Hadi Mizban / AP

Victims of Thursday's car-bombing in Iraq were returned from the Shiite festival of Arbaeen, which is shown in Karbala.

    By NBC News wire services

Updated at 1:30 p.m. ET -- A car-bomb explosion tore through a crowd of Shiite pilgrims returning home Thursday from a religious commemoration, killing at least 27 and reinforcing fears of renewed sectarian violence, according to Iraqi officials.

The blast erupted late in the afternoon in the town of Musayyib, about 40 miles south of the Iraqi capital. It targeted worshipers returning from the Shiite holy city of Karbala following the climax of the religious commemoration known as Arbaeen.

Children were among the 20 people confirmed killed, according to a police official. At least 60 people were wounded.

The bomb went off in the middle of a gathering of pilgrims changing buses coming from Karbala on their way to other destinations in the country, according to police.

Wave of attacks kills more than 100 in Iraq

"The explosion shook the whole block and smashed the windows of my house," said teacher Ibrahim Mohammed, who lives nearby. "I ran to the scene of the explosion only to find charred bodies and burning cars. There were women screaming and searching for their missing children."

Ali Sabaar, a pilgrim who said he witnessed the explosion, also described a horrific scene.

"I was getting a sandwich when a very strong explosion rocked the place and the blast threw me away," he said. "When I regained my senses and stood up, I saw dozens of bodies. Many cars were set on fire. I just left the place and didn't even participate in the evacuation of the victims."

A deadly car bombing in Baghdad in December was part of a recent wave of violence in Iraq had killed at least 26 people across the country by late in the month. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

A hospital official confirmed the casualty toll. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information to reporters.

Thursday marked the height of Arbaeen, when hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims converged on Karbala to mark the passing of 40 days after the anniversary of the seventh century martyrdom of the revered Shiite saint Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

Shiite pilgrims are one of the favorite targets for Sunni insurgents during Shiite religious events.

Bus blast kills more than 30 during Eid holiday

Iraqi authorities typically tighten security in Karbala and along routes used by pilgrims, but security forces acknowledge they are unable to prevent all attacks.

As in previous years, the pilgrims practiced the ritual of self-flagellation on the streets, hoisted Shiite religious flags on trees and lamp posts and served food from tents pitched on street corners.

Zaid Mohammed, a 21-year old student, said he walked to Karbala from a nearby city to show his deep respect for Imam Hussein.

"All the people came here to show their gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices made by Imam Hussein while fighting injustice," he said. "We have decided to confront all the security risks that we might face on our way to Karbala."

State television earlier Thursday aired video of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki walking among the pilgrims.

Arbaeen has been a frequent target for militants since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein, who banned Shiite festivals.

At least 70 killed during religious festival

The latest violence followed nearly two week of protests against Maliki by thousands of people from the minority Sunni community in the western province of Anbar.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

You Can't See It, But You'll Be A Different Person In 10 Years

No matter how old people are, they seem to believe that who they are today is essentially who they'll be tomorrow.

That's according to fresh research that suggests that people generally fail to appreciate how much their personality and values will change in the years ahead ? even though they recognize that they have changed in the past.

Daniel Gilbert, a psychology researcher at Harvard University who did this study with two colleagues, says that he's no exception to this rule.

"I have this deep sense that although I will physically age ? I'll have even less hair than I do and probably a few more pounds ? that by and large the core of me, my identity, my values, my personality, my deepest preferences, are not going to change from here on out," says Gilbert, who is 55 years old.

He realized that this feeling was kind of odd, given that he knows he's changed in the past. He wondered if this feeling was an illusion, and if it was one that other people shared: "Is it really the case that we all think that development is a process that's brought us to this particular moment in time, but now we're pretty much done?"

Gilbert says that he and his colleagues wanted to investigate this idea, but first they had to figure out how. The most straightforward way would be to ask people to predict how much they'd change in the next decade, then wait around to see if they were right. "The problem with that is, it takes 10 years," says Gilbert.

So the researchers took a much quicker approach. They got over 19,000 people to take some surveys. There were questions about their personality traits, their core values, and preferences. Some people were asked to look back on how they changed over the last 10 years. Others were asked to predict how they thought they would change in the next decade.

Then the scientists crunched the data. "We're able to determine whether, for example, 40-year-olds looking backwards remember changing more than 30-year-olds looking forwards predict that they will change," Gilbert explains.

They found that people underestimated how much they will change in the future. People just didn't recognize how much their seemingly essential selves would shift and grow.

And this was true whether they were in their teen years or middle-aged.

"Life is a process of growing and changing, and what our results suggest is that growth and change really never stops," says Gilbert, "despite the fact that at every age from 18 to 68, we think it's pretty much come to a close."

Personality changes do take place faster when people are younger, says Gilbert, so "a person who says I've changed more in the past decade than I expect to change in the future is not wrong."

But that doesn't mean they fully understand what's still to come. "Their estimates of how much they'll change in the future are under-estimates," says Gilbert. "They are going to change more than they realize. Change does slow. It just doesn't slow as much as we think it will."

The studies, reported in the journal Science, impressed Nicholas Epley, a psychology researcher at the University of Chicago. "I think the finding that comes out of it is a really fundamentally interesting one, and in some ways, a really ironic one as well," says Epley.

He says everyone seemed to remember change in the past just fine. "What was bad, though, was what they predicted for the future," says Epley.

He notes that if you want to know what your next 10 years will be like, it's probably good to look at what your past 10 years were like ? even though we seem not to want to do that.

Gilbert says he doesn't yet know why people have what he and his colleagues call the "end of history illusion."

One possibility is that it's just really, really hard to imagine a different, future version of yourself. Or maybe people just like themselves the way they are now, and don't like the idea of some unknown change to come.
