A long-standing controversy regarding the semiconductor gallium manganese arsenide, one of the most promising materials for spintronic technology, looks to have been resolved. Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab)in collaboration with scientist from University of Notre Dame have determined the origin of the charge-carriers responsible for the ferromagnetic properties that make gallium manganese arsenide such a hot commodity for spintronic devices. Such devices utilize electron spin rather than charge to read and write data, resulting in smaller, faster and much cheaper data storage and processing.

Wladek Walukiewicz, a physicist with Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division and Margaret Dobrowolska, a physicist at Notre Dame, led a study in which it was shown that the holes (positively-charged energy spaces) in gallium manganese arsenide that control the Curie temperature, the temperature at which magnetism is lost, are located in an impurity energy band rather than a valence energy band, as many scientists have argued. This finding opens the possibility of fabricating gallium manganese arsenide so as to expand the width and occupation of the impurity band and thereby boost the Curie temperature to improve spintronic potential.

"Our results challenge the valence band picture for gallium manganese arsenide and point to the existence of an impurity band, created by even moderate to high doping levels of manganese," Walukiewicz says. "It is the location and partially localized nature of holes within this impurity band that drives the value of the Curie temperature."

The results of this study have been published in the journal Nature Materials in a paper titled "Controlling the Curie temperature in (Ga,Mn)As through location of the Fermi level within the impurity band." Co-authoring the paper with Walukiewicz and Dobrowolska were Kritsanu Tivakornsasithorn, Xinyu Liu, Jacek Furdyna, Mona Berciu and Kin Man Yu.

As a commercial semiconductor, gallium arsenide is second only to silicon. Substitute some of the gallium atoms with atoms of manganese and you get a ferromagnetic semiconductor that is well-suited for spintronic devices. While it has been established that the ferromagnetism of gallium manganese arsenide is hole-mediated, the nature of the hole-states, which has a direct and crucial bearing on its Curie temperature, has been vigorously debated.

In semiconductors and other solid-state materials, the valence band is the range of energies in which the movement of charge is determined by availability of holes. Doping gallium arsenide with manganese can create an impurity band that depletes the valence band and shifts the Fermi level, the energy level at which the electronic states below are filled and those states above are empty.

"The question has been whether the holes mediating the interactions of manganese spins reside in a delocalized valence band, or in a manganese-derived partially localized impurity band," Walukiewicz says. "The valence band model assumes that a separate impurity band does not exist for manganese concentrations higher than about two-percent."

Walukiewicz and his co-authors addressed the issue through channeling experiments that measured the concentrations of manganese atoms and holes relevant to the ferromagnetic order in gallium manganese arsenide. These experiments were carried out at Berkeley Lab's Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry laboratory, which is operated under the direction of co-author Kin Man Yu. The results of these experiments were then combined with magnetization, transport and magneto-optical data performed at the University of Notre Dame.

"We were able to determine where the manganese atoms were located, what fraction of this total replaced gallium and acted as electron acceptors (meaning they created ferromagnetic-mediating holes), and what fraction was in the interstitial sites, acting as positively-charged double donors compensating for a fraction of manganese acceptors," Walukiewicz says. "Taking all our data together, we find that the Curie temperature of gallium manganese arsenide can be understood only by assuming that its ferromagnetism is mediated by holes residing in the impurity band, and that it is the location of the Fermi level within the impurity band that determines the Curie temperature."

Electron spin is a quantum mechanical property arising from the magnetic moment of a spinning electron. Spin carries a directional value of either "up" or "down" and can be used to encode data in the 0s and 1s of the binary system. Walukiewicz says that understanding the factors that control the Curie temperature can serve as a guide for strategies to optimize ferromagnetic materials for spintronic applications.

"For example, with appropriate control of the manganese ions, either co-doping with donor ions, or modulation doping, we can engineer the location of the Fermi level within the impurity band to best the advantage," he says.

Walukiewicz says the findings of this study further suggest that it should be possible to optimize magnetic coupling and Curie temperature for the whole family of ferromagnetic semiconductors by tuning the binding energy of the acceptor ions.

The international gathering comes as the scientific community is divided about the risks and benefits of experiments that generated genetically-altered bird flu viruses.

Critics say the newly-created viruses are dangerous ? that if the germs escaped or were used deliberately as a bioweapon, they could potentially kill large numbers of people.

Supporters of the work say the dangers have been exaggerated and that the research is essential to understanding how bird flu circulating out in the wild might someday mutate and cause a pandemic.

Before the meeting, Fukuda cautioned that it was not expected to address all of the questions surrounding the bird flu research.

"What we'll try to do is look at some of the more urgent specific issues at this meeting, and then take those broader issues and then try to address those at a later broader process," Fukuda said.

There are major questions swirling around these bird flu experiments: Should the scientific manuscripts describing them be published openly, or would that just give bioterrorists ideas? If some of the information is kept under wraps, how will legitimate researchers get access to it? Should experiments like this continue to be done, and if so, under what conditions in terms of lab safety and international oversight?

The group that's gathered in Geneva is small ? about two dozen people from around the world. It includes scientists whose labs did the work, other flu virologists, government officials, a couple of editors from science journals that want to publish the manuscripts and one expert on research ethics.

The meeting is not open to the public and participants have signed confidentiality agreements, because the discussion involves details of the two unpublished flu experiments that have raised concerns.

Last month, flu researchers voluntarily declared a 60-day moratorium on any further experiments that use these new viruses. They also agreed not to make any more like them for now. But the 60-day pause is almost half over, and the key issues remain unresolved.

"Right now what we have is a moratorium, and we have clearly defined positions on both sides of the debate, but what we need now is a process for resolving that dilemma," says Thomas Inglesby, director of the Center for Biosecurity of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

He's pleased that the WHO is starting that process, and thinks if this type of bird flu research is to continue, it should do so with international oversight ? much like the WHO oversees research with smallpox.

The question of how to control legitimate biological research that could potentially be misused for weapons is nothing new. For a decade after Sept. 11 and the anthrax attacks, there were all kinds of meetings and discussions about what kind of oversight might be needed for such "dual-use" research, says Elisa Harris of the Center for International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland.

She says she finds the bird flu situation "a bit frustrating because we could have foreseen that, at some point in time, we would be confronted with a situation like this."

Neither the U. S. government or the WHO took any action that would have prevented it, says Harris. And it remains to be seen if the process that started this week in Geneva will lead to a new look at those wider issues, beyond bird flu.

"If this is Iran now, imagine Iran with the bomb."

Encouraging kids and teens to watch the news: It can be beneficial ...

Whether it is the devastating news of the economy or the good news of a sporting event, our kids should be involved in today?s current events.? This helps to have a well-rounded teen that will benefit them when applying to colleges and also in their adult life.

The last thing kids usually want to watch on television is the boring old news. SpongeBob SquarePants or Bevis and Butthead are certainly more interesting and entertaining. With hundreds of cable news channels to watch at any given time, even adults can go for years without ever watching the news.

Unfortunately, bad things tend to happen when people are not paying attention. It wouldn?t be a bad idea to get kids more informed on what?s happening in the world by watching the news.

Here are 10 lessons kids can learn from watching the news every day.

1. Current events ? The main purpose for watching the news is to stay abreast of current events. The local news will cover things going on in their community while national and international news expand their horizons to what?s happening around the country and around the world.
2. Media bias ? Unless they watch every day, kids may not realize there is such a thing as media bias and how to identify it. By watching different news sources from multiple channels, they?ll see that some shows may have an agenda and others are more objective.
3. Global events ? Watching the news will expand a child?s world beyond their personal experience and expose them to things going on around the globe. Even if they don?t completely understand what is going on or why, they at least know what?s going on and can ask questions for further clarification.
4. News versus sensationalism ? Daily observations will teach kids how to tell the difference between what is really news and what?s just sensationalism. Some news outlets get carried away with what Hollywood celebrities are doing rather than covering other important topics.
5. News is depressing ? One note of caution is that watching the news every day can be depressing. News sources tend to focus more on the bad things going on than the good, so too much exposure to the news can be a bad thing.
6. Hot topics ? Kids watching daily will soon learn how everyone will be covering the same stories each day and then all switch focus to the next hot topic that comes along. If they want to find out whatever happened with the last event, they?ll have to do more research than just watching TV. Television has a short attention span.
7. History ? Children may not realize it, but by watching the news, they?re witnessing history in the making. Years from now, when their kids are learning history, they?ll be able to remember when they watched historical events unfold on the news.
8. Well informed ? Kids who watch the news every day are far better informed than their peers. Instead of focusing on video games and cartoons, they would actually have some concept of what?s going on the world and be able to carry on a conversation with adults.
9. Help with school ? Any students who watch the news regularly are going to far better in school than those who don?t. They?ll have an advantage in any social studies, civics and history classes they take.
10. Politics ? There?s nothing like watching the news to keep up on politics. Kids who are better informed on that topic are more likely to get involved in political school organizations or even run for class president.

Kids who don?t have much exposure to watching the news may balk at first, so parents can make it a challenge. By giving them an incentive that gets them to watch every day for a week, maybe they?ll get hooked. Another way to gets kids watching is to just make a point of having the news on when their around instead of just switching the channel. Parents should always be sure to watch the news with their children in order to explain issues that are confusing and engage them in conversation about what they observe.

Kids who watch the news are far more likely to succeed in life than those who live in blissful ignorance.
