Making music together connects brains

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Anyone who has ever played in an orchestra will be familiar with the phenomenon: the impulse for one's own actions does not seem to come from one's own mind alone, but rather seems to be controlled by the coordinated activity of the group. And indeed, interbrain networks do emerge when making music together -- this has now been demonstrated by scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. The scientists used electrodes to trace the brain waves of guitarists playing in duets. They also observed substantial differences in the musicians' brain activity, depending upon whether musicians were leading or following their companion.

When guitarists play a duet, the activity of their brain waves synchronises. Scientists working with Ulman Lindenberger at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin had already discovered this in 2009. Now they have gone one step further, examining the brain activity of various pairs of guitar players performing a piece of music with two different parts. Their aim was to find out whether synchronisation of the brain waves would still occur when two guitarists are not playing exactly the same notes. If it did, this would be inconsistent with the assumption that similarities in brain activity between the two guitarists are entirely due to perceiving the same stimuli or performing the same movements. Instead, it would suggest something more spectacular: that the two brains synchronize to support interpersonal action coordination.

To test this hypothesis, the psychologists assigned 32 experienced guitarists to 16 duet pairs and attached 64 electrodes to each of the musicians' heads. This enabled the scientists to record the activity of the brain waves over different regions across the entire head. Then, the musicians were asked to play a rondo sequence from the Sonata in G major by Christian Gottlieb Scheidler a total of 60 times. Importantly, the two duet partners were given slightly different tasks: They had to play in two voices, and one of the two was assigned a leading role, ensuring that they both started at the same time and were keeping the same tempo.

The difference between leader and follower was reflected in the electrical activity captured by the electrodes: "In the player taking the lead, synchronization of brain waves measured at a single electrode was stronger, and already present before to the duet started to play," says Johanna S?nger, the first author of the study. This was particularly true for delta waves, which are located in the frequency range below four Hertz. "This could be a reflection of the leading player's decision to begin playing," S?nger thinks.

The scientists also analysed the coherence between the signals from different electrodes attached to the duets' heads. The result was remarkable: When the musicians had to actively coordinate their playing, that is especially at the beginning of a sequence, the signals from frontal and central electrodes were clearly associated -- not only within the head of one player, but also between the heads of the duet partners.

"When people coordinate actions with one another, small networks within the brain and, remarkably, between the brains are formed, especially when the activities need to be precisely aligned in time, for example at the joint play onset of a piece," says Johanna S?nger.

The current data thus indicate that interbrain networks connect areas of both brains that previously have been associated with social cognition and music production. And such interbrain networks are expected to occur not only while performing music. "We assume that different people's brain waves also synchronise when people mutually coordinate their actions in other ways, such as during sport, or when they communicate with one another," S?nger says.

UK judge issues damning press verdict

LONDON (AP) ? Britain needs a new independent media regulator to eliminate a subculture of unethical behavior that infected segments of the country's press, a senior judge said Thursday at the end of a yearlong inquiry into newspaper wrongdoing.

Lord Justice Brian Leveson said a new regulatory body should be established in law to prevent more people being hurt by "press behavior that, at times, can only be described as outrageous." But Prime Minister David Cameron balked at that idea, warning that passing a new law to set up the body would mean "crossing the Rubicon" toward state regulation of the press.

Leveson issued his 2,000-page report at the end of a media ethics inquiry that was triggered by revelations of tabloid phone hacking and expanded to engulf senior figures in politics, the police and Rupert Murdoch's media empire.

His proposals will likely be welcomed by victims of press intrusion and some politicians, who want to see the country's rambunctious press reined in. But some editors and lawmakers fear any new body could curtail freedom of the press.

Cameron welcomed Leveson's proposal for a new regulator with powers to settle disputes, order corrections and fine offenders.

But he said that asking legislators to enshrine it in law meant "crossing the Rubicon of writing elements of press regulation into the law of the land."

"I believe that we should be wary of any legislation that has the potential to infringe free speech and a free press," Cameron told lawmakers in the House of Commons. "In this House which has been a bulwark of democracy for centuries, we should think very, very carefully before crossing this line."

Leveson insisted in his report that politicians and the government should play no role in regulating the press, which should be done by a new body with much stronger powers than the current Press Complaints Commission.

He said "what is needed is a genuinely independent and effective system of self-regulation."

But Leveson said it was "essential that there should be legislation to underpin the independent self-regulatory system."

"The ball moves back into the politicians' court: they must now decide who guards the guardians," he said.

He said the new body should be composed of members of the public including former journalists and academics ? but no serving editors or politicians. It should have the power to demand prominent corrections in newspapers and to levy fines of up to 1 million pounds ($1.6 million).

Critics of the tabloid press generally welcomed the report.

Former Formula One boss Max Mosley, who sued Murdoch's News Corp. for invasion of privacy over claims he had taken art in a Nazi-themed orgy, said Leveson's report went in the right direction, although "I would have liked to see more."

Campaign group Hacked Off said Leveson's proposals "are reasonable and proportionate and we call on all parties to get together to implement them as soon as possible."

Cameron set up the Leveson inquiry after revelations of illegal eavesdropping by Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid sparked a criminal investigation and a wave of public revulsion.

The furor erupted in 2011 when it was revealed that the News of the World had eavesdropped on the mobile phone voicemails of slain schoolgirl Milly Dowler while police were searching for the 13-year-old.

Murdoch shut down the 168-year-old newspaper in July 2011. His U.K. newspaper company, News International, has paid millions in damages to dozens of hacking victims, and faces lawsuits from dozens more, from celebrities, politicians, athletes and crime victims whose voicemails were hacked in the paper's quest for scoops.

Leveson heard evidence from hundreds of journalists, politicians, lawyers and victims of press intrusion during months of hearings that provided a dramatic, sometimes comic and often poignant window on the workings of the media. Witnesses ranged from celebrities such as Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and Hugh Grant ? who both complained of intrusive treatment ? to the parents of Dowler, who described how learning that their daughter's voicemail had been accessed had given them false hope that she was alive.

Leveson said that the ongoing criminal investigation constrained him from accusing other newspapers of illegal behavior, but argued there was a subculture of unethical behavior "within some parts of some titles."

While many editors have denied knowing about phone hacking, Leveson said it "was far more than a covert, secret activity, known to nobody save one or two practitioners of the 'dark arts.'"

More broadly, he said newspapers had been guilty of "recklessness in prioritizing sensational stories almost irrespective of the harm the stories may cause."

"In each case, the impact has been real and, in some cases, devastating," the judge said.

The hacking scandal has rocked Britain's press, political and police establishments, who were revealed to enjoy an often cozy relationship in which drinks, dinners and sometimes money were traded for influence and information.

Several senior police officers resigned over the failure aggressively to pursue an investigation of phone hacking at the News of the World in 2007. But Leveson said that "the inquiry has not unearthed extensive evidence of police corruption.

Leveson said over the past three decades, political parties "have had or developed too close a relationship with the press in a way which has not been in the public interest."

He acquitted senior politicians of wrongdoing, but recommended that political parties publish statements "setting out, for the public, an explanation of the approach they propose to take as a matter of party policy in conducting relationships with the press."

Cameron is under intense pressure from both advocates and opponents of a new law to set up a press regulator. He is also tainted by his own ties to prominent figures in the scandal.

Former Murdoch editors and journalists charged with phone hacking, police bribery or other wrongdoing include Cameron's former spokesman, Andy Coulson, and ex-News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks, a friend of the prime minister.

Coulson and Brooks appeared in court Thursday on charges of paying public officials for information.

Cameron called on the press to implement Leveson's proposals quickly.

"While nobody wants to see full statutory regulation, the status quo is not an option," he said. "The system of press regulation we have is badly broken and it has let down victims badly."

Google apps package updated today, just in time for the new AOSP ROMs

AOSP

The folks who do this sort of thing have updated the Google Apps package today, handing you a shiny new flashable to go with that 4.2.1 AOSP ROM you're about to download.

Technically a grey area, Google doesn't release their closed source applications for redistribution. Instead, they get sucked out of a phone running the current version, and blood, sweat, and scripts are used to create a package that gives you all the Googley services you would expect from an Android phone.

Yesterday's 4.2.1 updates didn't bring about any new versions of the Gapps, so we imagine this update is more along the lines of streamlining and enhancing the installation process -- the biggest step in the whole process. Grab em from the source link below so you have them the next time you need them.

German Kitchens Leading The Way On All Fronts [Guest Post] ? UK ...

German efficiency and technical excellence is something that has never been doubted. Whether it be cars, machinery or even kitchens ? the nation?s attention to detail and meticulous workmanship has resulted in economic excellence and limited damage at the hands of the recession. German kitchens are now becoming the choice of many for their homes due to the aforementioned quality, rigidity and a sleek look.

German Kitchens

This is the case to such an extent that kitchen showrooms are popping up, dedicated to showcasing the very best fitted kitchens from our German cousins ?some of the best of which are based in Canterbury. Kitchen specialists have seen such a surge in demand for high quality kitchens that they are even due to open a 4,000 sq ft flagship showroom in London.

Not only is Germany pulling away from the pack in terms of superb kitchens but also what is produced from within them. Michelin now place German restaurants and kitchens second behind France in terms of food quality and excellence, presumably due to the extra wealth that has arisen as a result of their economic fortune.

Previously dismissed or even ridiculed for less than glamorous dishes such as saumagen (pig?s stomach) or sauerbraten (horse in vinegar) ? Germany is well and truly at a pinnacle when it comes to haute cuisine and the facilities with which they are produced.

Michelin Stars

There are now 10 restaurants in Germany that hold three of the much coveted Michelin stars, with La Belle Epoque in Lubeck-Travemunde being the latest to reach this very desirable milestone. Michelin have rewarded the Germans with this accolade due to consistent excellence and also the experimental food produced in its kitchens. This said, France is still literally miles away from the rest of Europe with an incredible 26 three star Michelin restaurants.

Tim Raue, hailing from the country?s capital has also recently been voted as the chef with the most international outlook ? he dazzled Michelin judges with his dim sums.

So, with some of the finest food and kitchens that are setting standards for the rest of the globe, it seems that Germany is the place to be at present for all the gastro out there. Top quality tools and easy to manoeuvre kitchens, top produce and an economy that can afford it ? France may not be quaking in its boots just yet but time could tell.

Senator Reid says little progress made on "fiscal cliff" talks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Tuesday that he is disappointed that there has been "little progress" among Democratic and Republican lawmakers as they try to reach a deal to avoid the year-end "fiscal cliff."

Reid, a Democrat, told reporters that not much headway has been made since congressional leaders met with President Barack Obama on November 16.

"They talked some happy talk about doing revenues, but we only have a couple weeks to get something done," Reid said about Democrats' negotiations with Republicans. "So we have to get away from the happy talk and start talking about specific things."

Despite his tone of frustration, Reid also said he is optimistic that lawmakers ultimately will reach a deal to avoid plunging off the fiscal cliff, a convergence of an estimated $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts that threatens to trigger another recession.

"I'm extremely hopeful, and I do not believe that the Republicans are going to allow us to go over the cliff," Reid said.

Brain area's role in learning identified

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? An area of the brain called the orbitofrontal cortex is responsible for decisions made on the spur of the moment, but not those made based on prior experience or habit, according to a new basic science study from substance abuse researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Scientists had previously believed that the area of the brain was responsible for both types of behavior and decision-making. The distinction is critical to understanding the neurobiology of decision-making, particularly with regard to substance abuse.

The study was published online in the journal Science.

Scientists have assumed that the orbitofrontal cortex plays a role in "value-based" decision-making, when a person compares options and weights consequences and rewards to choose best alternative. The Science study shows that this area of the brain is involved in decision-making only when the value must be inferred or computed rapidly or hastily. If the value has been "cached" or pre-computed, like a habit, then the orbitofrontal cortex is not necessary.

The same is true for learning -- if a person infers an outcome but it does not happen, the resulting error can drive learning. The study shows that the orbitofrontal cortex is necessary for the inferred value that is used for this type of learning.

"Our research showed that damage to the orbitofrontal cortex may decrease a person's ability to use prior experience to make good decisions on the fly," says lead author Joshua Jones, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a research scientist at NIDA, part of the National Institutes of Health. "The person isn't able to consider the whole continuum of the decision -- the mind's map of how choices play out further down the road. Instead, the person is going to regress to habitual behavior, gravitating toward the choice that provides the most value in its immediate reward."

The study enhances scientists' understanding of how the brain works in healthy and unhealthy individuals, according to the researchers.

"This discovery has general implications in understanding how the brain processes information to help us make good decisions and to learn from our mistakes," says senior author Geoffrey Schoenbaum, M.D., Ph.D., adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and senior investigator and chief of the Cellular Neurobiology Research Branch at NIDA. "Understanding more about the orbitofrontal cortex also is important for understanding disorders such as addiction that seem to involve maladaptive decision-making and learning. Cocaine in particular seems to have long-lasting effects on the orbitofrontal cortex. One aspect of this work, which we are pursuing, is that perhaps some of the problems that characterize addiction are the result of drug-induced changes in this area of the brain."

The scientists are continuing their research, examining the specific coding of the neurons in the orbitofrontal cortex during this process, as well as the effects that drugs of abuse have upon this area of the brain.

"Drug addiction is marked by severe deficits in judgment and bad decision-making on the part of the addict," says Dr. Jones. "We believe that drugs, particularly cocaine, affect the orbitofrontal cortex. They coerce the system and hijack decision-making."

The researchers examined the orbitofrontal cortex's role in value-guided behavior. The brain assigns two different types of values to behaviors and choices. Cached value is a value that is learned during prior experience. Inferred value happens on the spur of the moment, considering the entire model of rewards and consequences.

"Cached value is stored during prior experience, says Dr. Jones. "For example, you learn your route home on your commute through experience -- the habit of how you get home. You turn right, go left, make another right. Inferred values, however, are based on estimating goals and values on the fly using your knowledge of the entire structure of the environment. For example, instead of just habitually going home on your usual route, you have the full map in your mind of all the roads that you use. You can adjust your route, making different turns, depending on the time of day or the amount of traffic. These inferred decisions are adaptive -- much more flexible based on the situation."

The scientists used a rat model for their research, disabling the orbitofrontal cortex and measuring the difference in behavior that resulted. Further study using the same rat model -- work not reported in this paper -- has shown that cocaine use mimics this damage to the orbitofrontal cortex.

Further study of this neurobiological mechanism is needed, and the results have not been replicated in humans, but certainly the research is promising, says E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., vice president for medical affairs at the University of Maryland and John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and dean at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "Our goal here at the School of Medicine is to make groundbreaking discoveries in the laboratory that can be translated into new treatments and new hope for patients and their families," says Dean Reece. "We are hopeful that research tells us more about the basic mechanisms in the brain will translate to new techniques in neurobiology and in treating devastating conditions such as drug addiction."

Missing moon rocks found in Minnesota storage site

The Genesis Rock recovered during the Apollo 15 mission (Wikicommons)Several rocks taken from humankind's first lunar landing have been unearthed once again, with the moon rocks this time turning up in a Minnesota storage area.

The Star Tribune reports that the pebble-sized samples collected by the Apollo 11 voyage in 1969 somehow ended up in a government storage area in St. Paul.

"The Apollo 11 moon rocks were found amongst military artifacts in a storage area at the Veterans Service Building in St. Paul," Army Maj. Blane Iffert, the former state historian for the Minnesota National Guard, told the paper. "When I searched the Internet to find additional information about the moon rocks, I knew we had to find a better means to display this artifact."

Each state was given a sample of the moon rocks after Apollo 11's successful voyage.

On Wednesday, the rocks will be transferred to the state's Science and Technology Academies Reinforcing Basic Aviation and Space Exploration (STARBASE) educational program.

Even if Iffert had wanted to sell the rocks, rather than donate them, he wouldn't have had much of a choice. As CBS News notes, moon rocks are considered a national treasure and selling them is illegal.

But before anyone starts making jokes at Minnesota's expense, Iffert says his discovery actually puts the state on the brighter side of moon rock history.

Reportedly, 180 of the 270 Goodwill Moon Rock samples former President Nixon gave to the 50 states after the Apollo 11 and 17 missions are currently unaccounted for.

Former NASA investigator? Joseph Gutheinz said 11 states are currently missing their moon rock samples from the Apollo 11 mission, including Alaska, New Jersey, Wisconsin and Texas.

"We are honored to have this in our collection to preserve for future generations," said Pat Gaarder, deputy director for the Minnesota Historical Society, in a statement. "It is also exciting to think that our collection includes artifacts from across the globe and, now with these moon rocks, the galaxy."

AP Source: Reds and Broxton in 'substantial' talks

(AP) ? Reliever Jonathan Broxton is having "substantial talks" with the Cincinnati Reds about a multiyear deal, a person familiar with the negotiations said on Monday.

Broxton also is talking to several other teams, looking for a good fit for the next few years, said the person speaking on condition of anonymity because no deal has been reached.

The Reds got Broxton in a trade with Kansas City last July to solidify their bullpen. He became a free agent after going 3-3 with a 2.82 ERA and four saves in six chances for Cincinnati. Broxton had 23 saves in 27 chances with Kansas City before the trade.

Broxton's priority is a multiyear deal with a team that would use him in a set-up or closer's role, said the person familiar with the talks. He's hoping to have an agreement with a team this week.

By signing Broxton, the NL Central champions could move left-hander Aroldis Chapman and his 100 mph fastball back into a starter's role. They had planned to give him a chance to win a spot in the rotation during spring training, but closer Ryan Madson tore a ligament in his pitching elbow and needed reconstructive surgery.

Manager Dusty Baker eased Chapman into the closer's role and got sensational results. Chapman, who had never closed games in his career, saved 27 consecutive chances and was 38 of 43 overall in save opportunities with a 1.55 ERA in 68 appearances.

Broxton moved into the closer's role in September when Chapman developed a tired shoulder, saving all of his four chances.

The 28-year-old Broxton missed most of the 2011 season with the Dodgers because of a bone spur in his elbow that required surgery. He agreed to a $4 million, one-year deal with Kansas City last season, starting as a set-up man for closer Joakim Soria. He assumed the closing role in March, when Soria had to have reconstructive elbow surgery.

PREPARING FOR A LESS WASTEFUL, LESS STRESSFUL ...

WASTE (of money, time, resources) & STRESS during the holidays.

This has been heavy on my mind for the last several Christmases. So many years of buying junk just to have something to give someone, or to pad the amount of gifts per child to increase the Christmas morning ?MAGIC FACTOR?. It has always caused me to pause and regret. More and more as each Christmas morning passes, as I survey the damage and pick up the trash?and realize how fast it goes and how little it means.

I don?t want gifts given out of obligation, and I don?t want a throwaway gift. I don?t want to be just another name on someone?s shopping list either, adding to their stress and taking money out of their bank account. I also know that it isn?t possible or even practical to expect a meaningful, thoughtful gift EVERY YEAR. That?s okay, I?m content without getting anything. All the more incredible when a gift is placed on my lap. Knowing it meant something to the person giving it.

Watch this video that Patagonia sent out today and think about how you think about gifts and giving. Think about what really matters for your family. Think about what the IDEA of gifts really means, and see if you can find a way to recreate that in other ways throughout the holiday.

Name swap with big groups. Each person gets one gift per person, thus creating more time and energy to purchase thoughtfully.

Plan a family talent show for Christmas morning after the gifts are opened.

Dim the lights, light the candles, and crank the Christmas music. Put on socks and slide around the kitchen (or wood) floor, sharing your best dance moves as you make breakfast after the presents are opened.

White elephant parties. This can include gag gifts of real gifts. Especially fun when alcohol and obnoxious people are involved.

Shop for gifts second hand. A special trinket or vintage treasure from the heart.

?This is something we can do. This is something we are called to do. And if we are quiet we will surely hear it.?

Host a ?favorites party?. Each person brings multiple amounts of ONE of their favorite things, under a certain dollar amount. Everyone at the party shares, you go home with some meaningful swag.

Time spent together throughout the month in what I call ?spontaneous delight?. Usually means you are doing something new or something old with a fresh twist. Can be something as simple as a new board game, just take it off the table and onto a picnic blanket outside (or inside in front of the fire). Ask the kids to prepare ?fancy snacks?.

Take more care to find things with meaning through the year, and not just in a mad rush at the big red store at the last minute.

Ask your spouse to write you a letter and place it in your stocking Christmas Eve. Do the same for him or her.

?Living is not buying. To be a citizen of the earth is to put one?s brief life to the use of one?s dearest gifts.?

If you know someone who has a need for a big ticket item, organize a donation fund and gift the person with cash to go towards their purchase. Put the cash in a fun container, and give it in a fun way. (Put a bunch of $1 bills in a huge jar, send them on a treasure hunt.)

For people in your life with children, give them the gift of your TIME, and set up a day (or weekend) to babysit for them. (Trust me, this is better than ANY gift certificate to ANY store.)

In creative friends/family circles, host an entirely handmade holiday. (My friend Emily is involved in a handmade holiday online workshop with tutorials for holiday decorations, ornaments, and other goodies)

Make lucky bags.

Take your family on a secret mission like this or this from Andrea at Hula Seventy. It will show them what it feels like to give non material items to others.

Give the gift of your own must haves. Think of the things in your life that you use every day. Is there anything you just couldn?t live without? This could be ANYTHING: a super plush towel, the perfect wallet, or an AMAZING ice cream scoop. If you love it, it will be something that ANYONE on your list would love to have. You can give everyone (or small groups of people) the same thing! This does two things ? eliminates stress and offers them something on your ?best of? list. Label the tag and let them know why it is one of your must haves.

?Gives nature a chance to rest, and time to heal.?

Host a stocking stuffer swap with other creative friends. (organize a group of friends, tally the number of children, set the dollar amount, every adult chooses a single item to make for that number of children. Share and you receive an eclectic mix of things to fill up the stockings Christmas morning.

Plan advent activities, like our Bernard The Christmas Elf.

If you are in a service industry (photography, landscaping, sewing, carpentry, cooking, massage, graphic design?), gift that service to someone on your list on a smaller scale than your average job. Or, go for the gusto and remodel their entire kitchen. ;)

And, from the Patagonia video: reduce what you buy, repair what you can, reuse what you no longer need, recycle what?s worn out.

?PURSUE NOT WHAT WE VAGUELY WANT, BUT WHAT WE DEEPLY NEED.?

Most of all, deep breaths, we can do this again, and I wish you ALL a sweet and simple holiday.

-Tara

6 Tips on Marketing Your Online Content | Business 2 Community

Content marketing is a simple phrase. It involves just two key elements.Content Marketing

?Content? which can be articles, videos and images in all their various multi-media formats.

?Marketing? which means taking that content and letting the online world knows it exists. In essence it is implementing strategies and tactics of making your ideas spread.

Marketing your content is a challenge in a world where there are over 2 billion internet users who are bombarded with emails, streams of tweets and banner ads.

The process of content marketing involves the creation of material that is informative but is also written on a perspective which shows your business in a positive light. Good content marketing will create interest in your business, attracting traffic to your website and hopefully, sales or conversations as well.

Great content will position your business as a thought leader in its industry and it will also educate, inform, entertain and inspire.

There are many ways of doing content marketing but not all methods yield the positive results! Here are six tips to get you started on marketing your own content:

Tip 1: Drip feed your content

There is a tendency to create too much content, unleash it on the Internet and then expect it to carry traction throughout the year but this isn?t always a good idea. News and current events change all the time which means your target audience may not be searching for the same things as they were searching for two or three months ago. Publish content consistently and persistently making your sure the content you produce has some relevancy to current events and what your target audience may be interested in at the present time.

Tip 2: Monitor old content

Use Analytics and visitor level call tracking software to monitor your content. Once you find out what types of articles seem to be the most effect, you will have a better idea as to what types of content your target audience are interested in. The success of your content will be measured in many ways but broadly speaking, an article that produces a high level of the following would be considered good content:

  • High Traffic
  • Prompts interest and enquiries
  • Generates sales

Tip 3: Make use of social media

Once your content has been published, the main objective is to get as many people to see view it who may be interested in your business and leveraging social media is an excellent place to start in order to achieve this. Posting content on your social media accounts will bring your content to those following your social media accounts. If these people like your content, they may choose to share it with their followers and a snowball effect is created which may possibly result in your content going viral!

In addition to this, we already know that Google uses social media signals when deciding your positions in the search results so an article that gets a good number of ?Likes?, shares, comments, tweets, +1s is likely to improve your search engine positions as well.

Tip 4: Aim for quality not quantity

Hundreds, if not thousands of pieces of content are created every day. A web surfer is spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing content to read. Creating an interesting title will definitely be effective in getting a user to click on your article rather than the next person?s article but a poorly written, uninteresting article will just get scanned and then discarded. This means no social love and definitely no enquiries or sales.

Find out what your target audience are interested in and create high quality, engaging, thought provoking content that they would be interested in. no doubt in the time needed to create one high quality article, you could?ve possibly created two, or maybe three low quality articles but that one high quality article will prove more beneficial than three lower quality ones.

Tip 5: Incorporate the right amount of SEO

Your article needs to be able to turn up in search engine results pages (the holy grail is to be on page one at the top of the page) and then by having the right headline and description attract the right people. To do this, you should include some relevant keywords into your article but don?t overdo it. Adding too many keywords may result in the article losing its readability factor. As a general rule you should always add keywords but the article should be written for a human, not a search engine.

Tip 6: Inform rather than sell

People receive sales pitches all the time, be it in the electrical store, through the post, a popup advert on the Internet or whilst passing a billboard. They?ve become very good at noticing a blatant attempt to make them purchase something which is why all marketing articles should aim to inform rather than sell a product. Provide genuinely useful information on a topic which would allow you to mention your product or service along with some of its merits. A well written article will make the reader come to a conclusion without sounding like a sales pitch.

At the centre of any content marketing strategy is the creation of high quality content. Once high quality content has been created, it needs to be promoted and monitored using web analytics and call tracking solutions. Do this and you will well on your way to having a successful content marketing strategy.

Republicans starting to rebel against tax pledge

With the fiscal cliff looming for the United States, some Republican members of Congress said Sunday they are ready to break a long standing pledge not to raise taxes.

"The only pledge we should be making to each other is to avoid becoming Greece. And Republicans should put revenue on the table," South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said on ABC's "This Week."

Read more of the discussion of the fiscal on "This Week" today.

Graham's comments followed those by another Republican senator, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, who said last week he'll no longer abide by the pledge.

"I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge," he said in a local interview.

He got support today from House member Peter King, another Republican from New York.

"I agree entirely with Saxby Chambliss -- a pledge he signed 20 years ago, 18 years ago is for that Congress," King said on NBC's "Meet the Press." He added, "The world is changed and the economic situation is different."

Read Matthew Dowd's analysis of the efforts to avoid the fiscal cliff.

This growing chorus is about the pledge that Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist has gotten hundreds of Republicans to sign. But in an interview with ABC News, Norquist says it's just a few deserters.

"The people who have made a commitment to their constituents are largely keeping it," he said. "The fact is there is more support for both protecting the rates, you saw the Republican leader in the house say rates are non-negotiable, and he also talked about revenue coming from growth."

But President Obama has said rates will go up for the wealthy. There could be some political cover for Republicans if the country actually goes over the cliff. All the Bush era tax cuts would expire, including those for the wealthy. Congress could then vote to actually reduce taxes for everyone expect the rich. Therefore, they wouldn't technically raise taxes and violate Norquist's pledge.

But Nordquist said he doesn't think the public would buy those political moves, and he also doesn't think the country will actually go over the cliff.

"I think we'll continue the tax cuts. Not raise taxes $500 billion. Obama made the correct decision (by extending the Bush tax cuts) two years ago," Norquist told us.

Leading Democratic Sen. Richard Durbin also said he believes a deal is possible now that the Thanksgiving holiday break is over.

"We can solve this problem," he said on "This Week," adding: "There's no excuse. We're back in town."

Bill O'Brien May Have Cursed In Postgame Interview After Penn State Win Over Wisconsin (VIDEO)

An emotional Bill O'Brien appeared eager to get his words out when Jessica Mendoza of ESPN2 asked him about his players following Penn State's win over Wisconsin in the season finale. Many thought that, in his haste, the first-year head coach didn't get those words out as he intended.

Although the Nittany Lions' head coach meant to call his players "a bunch of fighters," many people believe they heard him call them "a bunch of f***ers."

"They fight hard," O'Brien continued, giving no indication that he was aware of any gaffe. "They're a bunch of great kids. It's been a memorable year."

While there are conflicting opinions on whether he dropped an F-Bomb or not, several took to Twitter to talk about what they thought they heard. What do you think he said? Was that an accidental four-letter word? Or did his voice just crack while saying "fighters"? Let us know in the comments.

Egypt's Mursi faces judicial revolt over decree

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi faced a rebellion from judges who accused him on Saturday of expanding his powers at their expense, deepening a crisis that has triggered violence in the street and exposed the country's deep divisions.

The Judges' Club, a body representing judges across Egypt, called for a strike during a meeting interrupted with chants demanding the "downfall of the regime" - the rallying cry in the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak last year.

Mursi's political opponents and supporters, representing the divide between newly empowered Islamists and their critics, called for rival demonstrations on Tuesday over a decree that has triggered concern in the West.

Issued late on Thursday, it marks an effort by Mursi to consolidate his influence after he successfully sidelined Mubarak-era generals in August. The decree defends from judicial review decisions taken by Mursi until a new parliament is elected in a vote expected early next year.

It also shields the Islamist-dominated assembly writing Egypt's new constitution from a raft of legal challenges that have threatened the body with dissolution, and offers the same protection to the Islamist-controlled upper house of parliament.

Egypt's highest judicial authority, the Supreme Judicial Council, said the decree was an "unprecedented attack" on the independence of the judiciary. The Judges' Club, meeting in Cairo, called on Mursi to rescind it.

That demand was echoed by prominent opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei. "There is no room for dialogue when a dictator imposes the most oppressive, abhorrent measures and then says 'let us split the difference'," he said.

"I am waiting to see, I hope soon, a very strong statement of condemnation by the U.S., by Europe and by everybody who really cares about human dignity," he said in an interview with Reuters and the Associated Press.

More than 300 people were injured on Friday as protests against the decree turned violent. There were attacks on at least three offices belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood, the movement that propelled Mursi to power.

POLARISATION

Liberal, leftist and socialist parties called a big protest for Tuesday to force Mursi to row back on a move they say has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

In a sign of the polarization in the country, the Muslim Brotherhood called its own protests that day to support the president's decree.

Mursi also assigned himself new authority to sack the prosecutor general, who was appointed during the Mubarak era, and appoint a new one. The dismissed prosecutor general, Abdel Maguid Mahmoud, was given a hero's welcome at the Judges' Club.

In open defiance of Mursi, Ahmed al-Zind, head of the club, introduced Mahmoud by his old title.

The Mursi administration has defended the decree on the grounds that it aims to speed up a protracted transition from Mubarak's rule to a new system of democratic government.

Analysts say it reflects the Brotherhood's suspicion towards sections of a judiciary unreformed from Mubarak's days.

"It aims to sideline Mursi's enemies in the judiciary and ultimately to impose and head off any legal challenges to the constitution," said Elijah Zarwan, a fellow with The European Council on Foreign Relations.

"We are in a situation now where both sides are escalating and its getting harder and harder to see how either side can gracefully climb down."

ADVISOR TO MURSI QUITS

Following a day of violence in Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said and Suez, the smell of tear gas hung over the capital's Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the uprising that toppled Mubarak in 2011 and the stage for more protests on Friday.

Youths clashed sporadically with police near the square, where activists camped out for a second day on Saturday, setting up makeshift barricades to keep out traffic.

Al-Masry Al-Youm, one of Egypt's most widely read dailies, hailed Friday's protest as "The November 23 Intifada", invoking the Arabic word for uprising.

But the ultra-orthodox Salafi Islamist groups that have been pushing for tighter application of Islamic law in the new constitution have rallied behind Mursi's decree.

The Nour Party, one such group, stated its support for the Mursi decree. Al-Gama'a al-Islamiya, which carried arms against the state in the 1990s, said it would save the revolution from what it described as remnants of the Mubarak regime.

Samir Morkos, a Christian assistant to Mursi, had told the president he wanted to resign, said Yasser Ali, Mursi's spokesman. Speaking to the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Morkos said: "I refuse to continue in the shadow of republican decisions that obstruct the democratic transition".

Mursi's decree has been criticized by Western states that earlier this week were full of praise for his role in mediating an end to the eight-day war between Israel and Palestinians.

"The decisions and declarations announced on November 22 raise concerns for many Egyptians and for the international community," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

The European Union urged Mursi to respect the democratic process.

Are You a Helicopter Parent?

If you?re a ?Helicopter Parent,? hovering and rarely out of touch, think about joining the grassroots movement that advocates giving teens space.

As you have noticed, there are lots of hormonal and brain changes going on in adolescence. You may feel ambivalent about backing off at this time, especially if your kids are under stress or emotionally fragile. But during these growing up years, a wide range of emotions comes with the territory. And learning to let go is best for them and for you.

Here are some practical tips to try as you shift the responsibility from your shoulders to where it now belongs:

  1. Encourage your teens to make their own decisions. Be supportive but have them deal with the consequences themselves. Give fewer directions while they?re learning new problem solving skills. Although they?ll be faced with many choices, experience is a great teacher.
  2. Resist completing chores that they can do. As much as these may have been in your job description up until now, it?s time to pass the baton. See it as boot camp. Soon enough your teens will be off to college and the more competent they are, the more confident they?ll be.
  3. Think of reasons to support their growth. Focus on their positive qualities as you sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Remember that right now they need to learn to be more independent and accountable for their actions. And that includes working things out for themselves.
  4. Give up old habits of micromanaging. You have to do it sooner or later. When you continue to worry about what?s going on in their lives, you?re sending them messages that you don?t trust they can handle it on their own.
  5. Technology makes it too easy to stay connected. If staying in touch regularly satisfies both of you, establish a middle ground and put some limits on the contact. Let your kids know that you?ll be there if necessary, but don?t enable their dependency.
  6. Minimize financial assistance. Sure, you need to be responsible for basic necessities, but encourage them to get part-time jobs in high school. As your goal is to prepare them to live on their own, help them learn how to budget. If they can?t manage, boomeranging back may become the only option and everyone then pays a price.

Watching your children grow up can fill you with mixed emotions. As you face the challenges that come with letting go, it may be harder than you imagine. Recognize the fine line between support and intrusion. When your teens are grown, don?t you want them to be independent, in healthy relationships, and ready for that dream job?

With Geithner's Replacement The Treasury May Get A Woman's Touch

WASHINGTON -- The best way to make sure that the next secretary of the Treasury is not overly beholden to Wall Street might be to hire a woman.

There are several female candidates in the running to take over the job expected to be vacated fairly soon by Tim Geithner. The selection of any one of them would break up one of the last remaining all-boys clubs in the top echelons of the federal government.

It could also break the financial services industry's extraordinary hold on fiscal policy.

Among the leading women candidates: Christina Romer, who served as chairwoman of Council of Economic Advisers during the first two years of the Obama administration; Laura D'Andrea Tyson, a top economic adviser in the Clinton administration; and Janet Yellen, the vice chairwoman of the Federal Reserve Board.

Probably not by coincidence, these women share a more skeptical attitude toward Wall Street than many of the men being considered for the job -- not to mention the current occupant.

"Traditionally, finance has been a boys club and traditionally, Treasury secretaries have come out of the financial sector," said Linda Bilmes, who teaches public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. "What we've had in Treasury for the large part is people who have been molded by Wall Street, and whose thinking is etched into certain Wall Street type patterns."

But with Wall Street's excesses having "brought the country to the brink of another depression," she said, it's time for a Treasury secretary who has more independence. "I don't think the point is having a woman just for the sake of having a woman," she said. "I think that the more important priority is to have a Treasury secretary who is a broad thinker, who is not completely tied to the Wall Street financial sector."

Very few women have gotten anywhere close to positions of leadership in the largest U.S. bank and securities firms. When it comes to Wall Street, "women are by nature outsiders," said Mark Thoma, a University of Oregon economist and blogger. "Not by their nature," he noted -- but because of how Wall Street currently works.

Thoma recently urged President Barack Obama to pick former FDIC chairwoman Sheila Bair for Treasury and Yellen for chairwoman of the Federal Reserve. "The question is," he wrote, "will President Obama be the first to recognize that males are not the only ones qualified to run our two most important financial agencies?"

Thoma said in an interview: "They bring a different point of view than the typical Wall Street perspective, without sacrificing any intellectual capacity."

Barbara Bergmann, who formerly taught economics at American University and the University of Maryland, said that women are "more conscious of the needs of people who are going to be hurt by not having the right policies in place.

"It might take testosterone to make these very chancy bets that may or may not pay off, but what you need in the Cabinet are people who will be for sensible policy," she said.

Bergmann is hoping Obama chooses Tyson, Romer, or Carmen Reinhart, a Harvard professor who has studied financial crises. "I think the main thing is there are really excellent candidates; I can't think of any men as good as those three," Bergmann said.

In the current environment, Wall Street's clout is so great that it controls the political discourse in Washington. Why else, asked Stephanie Kelton, an economics professor at University of Missouri-Kansas City, would we be talking about deficit reduction rather than economic growth right now?

Her answer is that the contraction of Social Security would serve Wall Street's interests by driving more retirement money into private accounts, so for them it's the top priority.

One of the ways Wall Street so often prevails is because its leaders "act as if they're the smartest people in the room," Kelton noted. They say: "Trust us. We know what we're doing." Outsiders are more likely to question that kind of thinking, Kelton said.

"The revolving door between Wall Street and that Treasury secretary position is very important to break," she said.

The choices Obama makes when he puts together his second-term economic team will speak volumes about his agenda.

Despite the populist rhetoric of his 2008 campaign, for instance, Obama made the conscious choice to staff his first-term economic team with former Clinton appointees whose sympathies were with Wall Street. Predictably, those men didn't recognize how out of control the financial system had become -- both because they helped create it and because it had served them so well.

One exception was Romer, who struggled to be heard in meetings dominated by the men with Wall Street backgrounds. Romer, for instance, championed much greater stimulus spending to spur economic growth and reduce unemployment. But in one famous exchange, as recounted in the Washington Post, Geithner snapped at her that stimulus was like ?sugar,? that its effect was fleeting, and that the White House should focus on reining in the debt instead.

A QUICK LOOK AT SOME OF THE PROSPECTS

The leading male contenders for the job are said to include Jack Lew, the White House chief of staff who was part of Obama's ex-Clinton ex-Wall Street first-term economic team; deficit-hawk former Clinton chief of staff Erskine Bowles; Larry Fink, the CEO of giant asset management firm BlackRock; and former Treasury official turned investment banker Roger Altman.

Among the women contenders:

  • Romer, an economics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, left the White House in late 2010. She recently urged that any budget bargain include job-creation measures and protect public investment in infrastructure, job training and basic scientific research.
  • Yellen, appointed by Obama to be vice chairwoman of the Federal Reserve in 2010. A former economics professor, she also chaired the Council of Economic Advisers from 1997 to 1999 under Clinton. More recently, she has been known as a champion of transparency at the historically inscrutable Fed.
  • Tyson, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, and one of Clinton's top economic advisers -- she led both the Council of Economic Advisers and the National Economic Council -- recently wrote that the negotiations to avert the so-called fiscal cliff "should focus on jobs." Purists note, however, that Tyson has also been a member of the board of directors of Morgan Stanley since 1997, and of AT&T since 1999.
  • Bair, former head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, is the moderate Republican George W. Bush appointee who became a hero to the public-interest community by standing up to the bankers on such issues as loan modification and the need to rein in too-big-to-fail banks. In her recent book, she also criticized fellow regulators, including Geithner, as apologists for Wall Street.
  • Reinhart co-authored a prescient book on the history of financial crises and is now considered one of the world?s top economic experts on the subject. She teaches at the Harvard Kennedy School. She is also considered more of a deficit hawk than most of the other women in possible contention for the job.
  • Lael Brainard, currently Geithner's undersecretary for International Affairs, is one of seven women in senior posts at Treasury. She was also on the staff of the National Economic Council during the Clinton administration. Progressives note, however, that there have been few signs of daylight between her and her current boss.
  • Sheryl Sandberg is the high-profile chief operating officer of Facebook, formerly of Google. She was also chief of staff to then-Treasury Secretary Larry Summers during the Clinton administration and served as an economist at the World Bank.

WOMEN REALLY ARE DIFFERENT

Ann Mari May, a University of Nebraska economist, recently co-directed a study comparing male and female economists. "We found that economists do have gender differences in their policy perspectives," she said. Specifically, female economists tend to favor a bigger role for government while male economists have greater faith in business and the marketplace.

She also cited anecdotal evidence that as women move into finance they can bring about different and better policy outcomes.

When it comes to picking a woman for Treasury, there is one obvious possible downside: The very conventional voices who want another "Wall Street Ace" to have the job will be disappointed.

"The risk in appointing a female Treasury secretary is if the market has discriminatory attitudes toward her, you have more risk in how the market might react," said Betsey Stevenson, a public policy professor at the University of Michigan

"Appointing someone for Treasury secretary, it's a tough thing. You need to make sure the person who's appointed is someone who markets trust, because one of the goals is market stability."

But at the same time, she said, "we want to make sure that Wall Street is not ruling itself."

Of course, the resistance to the idea could be the very reason to do it.

"There's a long-term benefit, which is the more you put women in positions of power, particularly in finance, the more that changes how people see women," Stevenson said. "It looks like people learn."

As a result, she said: "Putting a woman in as Treasury secretary could potentially have really profound impact on the entire industry."

I?ve distilled down the best of what I learned from these courses and offer you only the best of the best with my proven system.? In short, my system involves getting people with big email lists to send out an announcement asking people to buy your book on a given day.? This system isn?t ?spamming? because only ?opt-in? email lists are used. Even better, because my system uses email, it costs almost nothing to promote your book!

My system is simple, but to work it has to be implemented very carefully.? I guide you to eliminate mistakes so your bestseller campaign will work and YOU will become a Bestselling Author.

The VALUE of being recognized as a ?Bestselling Author? is worth more than you can imagine.? I have been asked to co-host a weekly radio program and my book is being featured on a weekly television series.? A nationally recognized author has asked me to join her in presenting weekend seminars. My phone now rings with requests for TV interviews, radio shows, newspaper stories, and magazine insertions. When you become a bestseller, you?ll have the ?BESTSELLING AUTHOR? status FOREVER!

In my system, I?m going to guide you through exactly what you need to do to launch your bestseller campaign in a precise and proven way. I will show you how to avoid expensive, embarrassing, time-consuming mistakes and money-losing pitfalls.? Follow my system and get ready to be a Bestselling Author. My greatest concern is witnessing other authors wasting time and money to become a bestseller without having the right expertise. They end up with another enormous, expensive book marketing endeavor gone sour. I don?t want that to happen to you! Let me plug you into my network of resources and save you from tragic mistakes.

I am a #1 Bestselling Author. My latest #1 Bestseller book is Secrets of the Marriage Mouse. I?ve been where you are now, and now help many authors achieve bestseller status. My own experience was amazing!? On the day of my book launch, my Secrets of the Marriage Mouse sold out all Amazon Fulfillment Centers by 1:09 PM.? By the end of the day, the entire first print run had sold out ? all at full price! I stayed up all night watching my ranking numbers ? it was so exciting! Early the next morning, I was off to the printer to order a second print run ? doubling the number of books printed!? And that print run sold out before the end of the month.? Even more surprising, once buyers were at my website, they bought my companion workbook and the eBook versions of both my book and my workbook ~ even though I did nothing to promote those items. As I write you, Secrets of the Marriage Mouse is being turned into an audio book and I have just finished negotiating foreign rights.

With my first bestseller campaign, my goal was to not only achieve bestseller status, but to maximize my profits and recoup the monies I had spent creating my book and workbook.? I succeeded beyond my wildest dreams?and so can you.
