Japan turns to India for rare earth

TOKYO, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- Japan on Friday signed an agreement with India to import rare earth minerals from the country in a move seen to reduce reliance on China, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

The agreement was signed by Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba and India's Ambassador to Japan Deepa Wadhwa here.

The pact will see Japan importing over 4,000 tonnes of rare earths from India annually with export from as early as next spring, said officials from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

The production and exports will be conducted by a joint venture between Japan's Toyota Tsusho Corp. and India's state-run Indian Rare Earths Ltd.

Japan has previously imported all its rare earth requirements from China but has been searching for alternatives following political turbulence with Beijing.
