The biggest mistake companies make during a corporate or operational crisis is a lack of communication and transparency with stakeholders and employees, causing a negative impact on valuations, according to a survey jointly released recently by the Canadian Investor Relations Institute (CIRI) and Fleishman-Hillard Inc.
Yet for those who have a crisis plan in place, only 29 percent of companies update it once a year, according to the survey results. As a rule, it is best practice to update a crisis plan at least once a year to ensure the content is evolving and maintaining relevance in today?s marketplace.

ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) ? Tropical Storm Ophelia caused flooding and cut off several communities on the eastern Caribbean island of Dominica as it regained strength, officials said Wednesday.
About 1,600 people were stranded and nearly a dozen cars washed away, said Nathaniel Isaac, the island's disaster preparedness coordinator.
"It's pretty terrible," he said.
Schools, businesses and government offices were closed Wednesday, and Isaac warned of more flooding as the storm continued to swirl northward away from land.
The heavy rain forced the closure of Canefield Airport, one of the island's two airports, said Rayburn Blackmoore, minister of roads and infrastructure.
Several communities lost power.
Ophelia had maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph (85 kph) Wednesday afternoon. The storm was expected to gain strength and could become a hurricane by Saturday on a track expected to take it east of Bermuda.
In the Pacific, Hurricane Hilary weakened to a Category 1 storm with winds of 80 mph (130 kph). It was not expected to hit Mexico's coast.

CHICAGO (CBS) ? Parents of preschoolers will soon be able to research the performance of pre-kindergarten education programs, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced on Wednesday.
The new five-star rating system is part of a series of reforms to improve early childhood education so that children will be better prepared to begin kindergarten, the mayor said.
Beginning July 1, 2012, the rating system will allow parents to assess all city-funded programs objectively while providing early childhood educators an incentive to improve their classes.
The ratings will be available online. A new website will also allow parents to search for an early childhood program that is best for their family?s needs. That site will also be operational in July, 2012.
?We must provide children in every neighborhood with the tools they need to excel in school and succeed in the workforce, and that includes providing excellent early childhood education,? Emanuel said at Educare Early Childhood Center in the city?s Grand Crossing neighborhood.
The reforms are the result of work done by the mayor?s The Early Childhood Task Force.

You see, franchising taught me a lot about international diplomacy and geopolitics.
Even in retirement, as I do a little bit of franchise consulting, I talk with folks from all over the world and it sometimes makes me think that it is the business folks who are doing deals all over the world, trading with one another that keep everyone talking, and it is their business interests which keep governments, and political egos from picking up their hatchet?s and declaring political impasse, or worse war.
In many ways international diplomacy and geopolitics is a lot like the running of a franchise company. Now then, I would like to address three main points;
1. Communication is the key 2. Franchisors often have to mediate and referee 3. Nations come together thanks to business interests and trade.
First, in a franchising company communication is the key, and the same thing is true in international diplomacy. In a franchising company you must be in constant contact with your franchisees, vendors, and leave those communications lines open at all times. If something is on their mind they will call you, and vice versa. Secondly, often franchisors have to mediate and referee. Often the vendors and the franchisees are having a disagreement, or a franchisee in one territory is upset with another.
The franchisor has to keep everyone working together and make sure that everything goes smoothly. Most of all without taking sides they need to hear everyone?s point, and help them work things out. Lastly, and I mentioned this briefly above, we must continue trading with one another because it is the money interests and the business interests which allow us all to be more efficient. Efficiency and trusting your business partners provides a strong basis for future collaboration regardless of the topic.
Now then, I realize there will always be rogue nations, just like there will always be hard to deal with customers. Sometimes the people you deal with will wake up having a bad hair day, but it behooves us all to continue to work together, do business together, and engage in free and fair trade. If we do that, there is still hope for humanity. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

HELSINKI (Reuters) ? Finnish data security firm Codenomicon says software faults in Bluetooth devices are becoming easier to exploit, putting users at risk.
Bluetooth radio technology is widely used to link cellphones to their accessories, and its security has not been considered a major problem.
Codenomicon, however, said in a research paper that it found critical problems in all Bluetooth-enabled car-kits it tested this year.
Bluetooth car-kits allow users to talk hands-free while they drive. Faulty security can give criminals access to information on users' phones, and coding errors could lead to damage to the car's electronic system and put drivers' safety at risk.
"The problems are in the implementation. Coders make human mistakes," technology chief Ari Takanen told Reuters on Friday, adding that deciding which device was more secure was very difficult.
"Quality of the software is rarely visible to consumers."
Bluetooth industry lobby Bluetooth SIG, when asked to comment on the findings, said the technology was secure.
"One of the reasons these members pick Bluetooth wireless technology is because of the strong security Bluetooth technology can provide through effective implementations by the OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) who build these products," said Mike Foley, Bluetooth SIG's executive director.

The Congressional Black Caucus has attacked the Tea Party and Conservatives in general, so they wouldn?t have to blame obama.
They clearly understand? obama is responsible for high unemployment, and even higher among blacks which now stands at 16.7
CBC Chairman Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) said Unhappy members of the Congressional Black Caucus ?probably would be marching on the White House? if Obama were not president.
He went on to say if Bill Clinton was in the White House and failed as obama has to address unemployment in the black race, they would be marching on the White House but because obama is? black ?There is a less-volatile reaction in the CBC because nobody wants to do anything that would empower the people who hate the president.?
So instead of laying the blame at the feet of obama, where it truly belongs, and targeting his leadership the? members of the black caucus are saying such things as:
Maxine Waters, the Tea Party ?can go straight to hell.?
Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.), called the Tea Party ?the real enemy? seeking to hold Congress ?hostage.?
Lets not forget Rep. Andr? Carson (D-Ind.), the CBC?s whip, who said that Tea Party-affiliated members of Congress see African-Americans as ?second-class citizens? and would be happy to see them ?hanging from a tree.?
Cleaver acknowledged that some of the things members of his caucus say might not be in the best interests of the ?aggressive agenda?that he is seeking to develop as chairman.
I think people need to forget that barack obama is black, and judge him on his character and his policies, which in truth are lacking?

In the past 5 days he has said ?pass the bill? over 100 times? In his speech to congress? he said the word job 37 times in 34 minutes?
It is clear that obama is indeed worried about HIS job.

Can we say battleground blues for obama; no wonder the NYT think he is clinically depressed? A republican took a seat in NY that had been held previously for 90 years by a Democrat.

But the news doesn?t stop here, Republican Mark Amodei won a landslide victory over Democrat Kate Marshall in a U.S. House special election in Nevada, an important presidential swing state.
What a sharp rebuff to Obama? Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by three to one in the district that Turner won.
That district is 40% Jewish and obama?s uneasy relations with the Israeli govt has caused strained emotions among Jewish Democrats.
Dov Hikind, a conservative Democrat and an Orthodox Jew who backed Turner, said in recorded phone calls to voters, ?President Obama needs to hear from us. He needs to get the message that Jewish Democrats have had it with how he?s treating Israel.?
Liberals calling out the Unions and dumping 500,000 into Weprin?s election and turning all the tricks did not help them retain the seats.
Rep. Pete Sessions told supporters, ?The president was not on the ballot tonight, but his failed policies were an albatross for the Democrats who were. By defeating two hand-picked Democrat candidates, you sent Obama a loud and clear message.?
Turner won endorsements from former New York mayors Ed Koch and Rudy Giuliani and from the editorial pages of the New York Daily News and New York Post.

About 100 Muslim demonstrators burned an American flag outside the U.S. embassy in London Sunday during a moment of silence to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Shouting ?USA ? terrorist state!? protesters carried anti-American signs? and made speeches denouncing the United States, the London Telegraph reported.
?You will always face suffering, you will always face humiliation, unless you withdraw your troops from Muslim lands,? one protester said.
Another declared that America had been ?defeated in Iraq and defeated in Afghanistan.?
not all Muslims feel this way: The counter-demonstrators held signs that said, ?Muslims Against Extremism? and ?If You Want Sharia, Move To Saudi.?
?I?m a Muslim. What they?re doing is bringing shame on all Muslims. This is not part of the teachings of Islam,? Abdul Sallam, 41, told The Telegraph. ?If the moderate Muslims all came out and spoke out, that would defeat them.?

Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?
Actually, I don?t think it?s me, and it?s not really that odd.
What happened after 9/11 ? and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not ? was deeply shameful. The atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.
A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits ? people who should have understood very well what was happening ? took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?
The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.
What is wrong with people on the Left, are they so self righteous they have no heart for the tragedy that thousands suffered on 9/11?

Really Big Coloring Books Inc in St. Louis has issued a coloring book to Honor those of 9-11.
Kids can color in the twin towers, Navy SEALS, and former president George W. Bush among others in a 12-hour narrative, rated ?PG,? saying children 10 and younger probably should use it with a parent or teacher at their side.
Muslims are angry over the book claiming it is slanted a ?slanted? manner, failing to distinguish the attackers as extremist radicals:
?It?s hateful, inflammatory and completely inappropriate for children or anyone for that matter,? Sharif said.
Of course this is a false statement by Sharif? because every where the word muslim is used in the coloring book it is? accompanied by the words ?terrorist? or ?extremist.?
The book?s publishers say its a generic black-and-white coloring book designed as a learning tool and a memorial tribute to the families of 9/11.
?The book itself has nothing to do with the Muslim faith,? Bell said. ?It talks about the radical Islamist jihadist Osama bin Laden and his 19 terrorists and what they do to America.?

Maxine Waters is at it again, some times I wish she would just shut her big mouth, she runs it way to much?.
According to The Hill, Waters said she and other Democrats believe that by fighting the Republican Party Obama can be successful ? although she also suggested there are questions about whether he will keep fighting for liberal priorities when things tough.
She also said: ?He?s been on the other side of the aisle talking with people. He?s invited them up to the White House to have beer. He?s invited them to come and watch the Super Bowl games,? Waters said, as reported by The Hill. ?He?s done all of that, and when they eat his food and drink his beer and leave, then they go and try to kill him [on Capitol Hill].?
?You?ve gotta fight ? you will not win this battle without fighting,? she said.

KABUL (Reuters) ? The head of Afghanistan's High Peace Council, former President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who had been tasked with trying to negotiate a political end to the war, was killed early on Tuesday evening, a senior police officer said.
His home is in Kabul's heavily guarded diplomatic enclave, and the attack came just a week after a 20-hour siege at the edge of the area sometimes known as the "green zone".
"Rabbani has been martyred," Mohammed Zahir, head of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Kabul Police, told Reuters. He had no further details.
Hashmatullah Stanikzai, spokesman for Kabul's police chief, said it was "probably" a suicide attack.
Rabbani was formerly leader of a powerful mujahideen party during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s and served as president in the 1990s when mujahideen factions waged war for control of the country after the Soviet withdrawal.
The assassination comes a week after a 20-hour gun and grenade attack that on Kabul's diplomatic enclave by insurgents, and three suicide bomb attacks on other parts of the city -- together the longest-lasting and most wide-ranging assault on the city.
Last week's siege was the third major attack on the Afghan capital since June and included three suicide bombing in other parts of the city. At least five policemen and 11 civilians were killed.
All three of those attacks are believed to be the work of the Haqqani network, a Taliban-allied insurgent faction, based along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

The Department of Health and Human Services is about to get a key report it will need to move ahead on one of the most important ? and politically sensitive ? health reform regulations it has to write: the rule spelling out what ?essential benefits? health plans will have to cover.
But there?s some speculation in health policy circles that HHS might not release the rule ? at least in final form ? until after the 2012 elections. And even if the department decides to issue the rule sooner, officials will still have to make a series of critical decisions on how specific it should be about what diagnoses, services and products must be covered.

Within weeks, HHS is supposed to get a report from the Institute of Medicine that will recommend the methods the department should use for deciding the requirements for a benefits package.
Once HHS has the report, officials will have to decide when the rule should come out. Officially, HHS can?t make any decisions before then, but well-placed health experts divide into two schools of thought: Either the rule is mostly written and HHS will issue it as soon as possible after receiving the IOM report, or they will wait until after the 2012 elections to avoid a political land mine.
?If I were a betting person, I would say we wouldn?t see anything final until November [or] December 2012,? said a longtime Washington hand. ?Why jump into this thing until you really have to? It will be demagogued no matter what.?
The political pitfalls are several: Requiring a generous benefit package will make insurance premiums more expensive. But a minimal package might anger consumer groups worried that those who carry this insurance will be underinsured.
And states that already have extensive coverage mandates could be concerned about a rule with less generous benefits. That?s because the law will obligate states to use their own dollars to subsidize any benefits that go beyond those required by federal law. So if those states require more coverage, they?ll have to make up the difference.
But Sara Rosenbaum, chairwoman of The George Washington University Health Policy Department and a reviewer of a preliminary IOM report on essential benefits, said the political dynamics argue for getting the rule out as quickly as possible.
?I don?t want to make it sound like the last days of Pompeii here, but it?s always possible for a president to lose the election, and you don?t want a proposed rule out there that a new administration could pull back,? Rosenbaum said.

Archery training tips for beginners can mean the difference between frustration and making huge improvements in your archery performance. Here are some simple archery tips that can greatly enhance your results.
1. Begin with a proper fitting bow. Having the right size bow can make a big difference. You should have the proper draw length and correct draw weight for you. Some experts recommend starting with recurve bows. Once you have learned to shoot competently with a recurve you will be able to handle a compound bow well. Starting off with a compound bow may make the learning process go slower.
2. The hand griping the bow should have a firm but relaxed grip. Not overly tense. For a right handed person hold the bow with your left hand. Make a V with your index finger and thumb. Then allow the handle of the bow to set deep in that V and wrap your thumb and fingers lightly around the bow handle. When you arm is extended the elbow should be slightly bent, no locked.
3. There are a few variations on holding the string that will work. The one that I suggest is to place two fingers under the arrow nock with one above. With your fingers on the string think about having the same amount of tension applied by each finger. As you start to draw the bow make sure your fingers are kept in the same place. A common mistake is to curl them as you draw. This can cause the arrow to separate from the string. As a right handed person draws, the right elbow should be kept up and pointed out, away from you. As for breathing I recommend taking a breath in as you begin the draw. You will want to be making a brief hold of the breath at the release.

4.You now want to draw to full draw and the end of the arrow and your fingers are brought to your anchor point.? This anchor or hold point maybe different with some people. It may be the corner of your mouth or a certain spot on your cheek. The important things are to find the anchor point that feels natural for you and works well and then to always use the exact same spot. One of the important keys to archery is to be consistent and make each motion and each shot the same. Once you reach this anchor point you then hold your breath briefly. You also want to keep your entire body relatively relaxed. If you are too tense you tend to jerk as the arrow is released. It should be a smooth release.
5. The aim is obviously very important. By performing all the other basics well it will allow you to aim better. Once you have reached full draw to?your anchor point you are ready to aim. Close your off arrow eye and use the other one to look straight down the arrow to the target. Identify the exact spot you want to hit, stare at it briefly. The aiming process should be no longer then about three seconds. You do not want to be holding your breath for more then two to three seconds as you aim. But at the same time you do not want to rush the shot. Always try to?stay relaxed and focused. Perform the release by simply relaxing your fingers. Do this smoothly and then slowly exhale.
6. Following through is important at this point. Beginning any type of incorrect movement too soon will mess up the shot. It is a common mistake for archers to drop the bow hand too soon. Momentarily you should remain still until the target has been hit. Then view your results.? With good technique, practice and these few archery tips for beginners you may be amazed at your rate of archery improvement.? Remember to always practice safety first!
