Health Matters: Basic Facts About Colo-Rectal Cancer - Needham ...

Submitted by the Needham Public Health Department

According to the American Cancer Society, in the United States, cancers of the colon and rectum, combined, are the third most common site of new cancer cases and deaths in both men and women.

During 2012, approximately 141,210 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed, and 49,380 persons will die from the disease. In Massachusetts it is estimated that 3,000 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed in 2012 and 980 deaths.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reports that there were 90 cases of colorectal cancer in Needham residents from 2004 to 2008, 41 male and 49 female cases. These are the most current statistics available.

Incident rates of colorectal cancer have been gradually decreasing due to increased screening, which can result in the detection and removal of colorectal polyps before they progress to cancer as well as detection of an early cancer.???

A Curable Form of Cancer

Cancer of the colon and rectum is one of the most curable forms of the disease.? When detected early and treated promptly, over three-quarters of all such patients can be cured and are able to return to normal lives. In fact, early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer yields a five-year survival rate of over 90 percent. Since colorectal cancer develops over a period of time, it is possible to detect the disease long before symptoms appear. Early detection of small cancers in polyps also reduces the likelihood of major surgery.?

The risk of colorectal cancer increases with age; more than 90 percent of cases are diagnosed in individuals aged 50 and older. Men and women who are at average risk for developing colorectal cancer should begin screening at age 50. Risk is also increased by certain inherited genetic mutations, familial adenomatous polyposis and hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer, a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps or a history of chronic inflammatory bowel disease.?

Colorectal cancer can develop with few or no symptoms at first and proceed to produce a wide range of symptoms, including diarrhea, constipation, or both, alternately; bleeding; a narrowing of the stool; or an increase in abdominal gas and discomfort. A cancer related health checkup is the first line of defense against cancer.?

The Importance of Screening

The American Cancer Society collaborated with several other organizations to release updated colorectal cancer screening guidelines. These joint guidelines emphasize prevention.? There are a number of recommended screening options that vary by the extent of bowel preparation, limitations, time interval and cost. This requires that you have a discussion with your primary care physician as to which screening is appropriate for you.?

Screening is the most important thing you can do to lower your risk of colon cancer. ??More than half of all colon cancers could be prevented if everyone followed these healthy lifestyle tips: get screened regularly, be physically active, maintain a healthy body weight, eat less red meat, limit the amount of alcohol consumed, eat fruits and vegetables and whole grains and do not smoke.? Colo-rectal screening saves lives.
