When most people hear the name Jane Fonda, the first image that is likely to come to mind is that of the original fitness guru. The actress-turned-fitness queen inspired a generation to take cardiovascular exercise seriously with her once-ubiquitous aerobics tapes.
However, she wasn?t always the picture of health. ?The 74-year-old actress revealed on Katie Couric?s Dec. 11th show that she, spurred by pressures to appear thin, battled bulimia for decades. Fonda?s revealing admission follows a string of other celebrities who have been candid about their battles with eating disorders?including Demi Lovato and Lady Gaga. Even Katie Couric recently discussed her own once-private struggle with bulimia on her show.
Jane Fonda has revealed that much of her negative body image stemmed from pressure she received from her father, actor Henry Fonda. She told Harper?s Bazaar magazine ?I was raised in the ?50s. I was taught by my father that how I looked was all that mattered.? She continued, ?He sent me messages that fathers should not send: Unless you look perfect you?re not going to be loved.?
Though it would be great if such pressures from loved ones were anachronisms, the fact is that many parents still put enormous pressures on their children to look a certain way. Poor body image can be a factor that contributes to eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. Fonda stated that it wasn?t until she was about 50 that she was able to replace her negative body image with a healthier one.
However, there are many women who harbor negative body images even later in life. A study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders showed that 60% 60-70-year old women were dissatisfied with their bodies. It has also been shown that older women are getting help in eating disorder clinics with greater frequency. ??Fonda has cautioned women who are struggling with eating disorders to get help as soon as possible. ?If you suffer from bulimia, the older you get, the worse it gets. It takes longer to recover?? She said.
Fonda made her choice to turn to recovery more than 30 years ago. ?I had a career, I was winning awards, I was supporting nonprofits, I had a family. I had to make a choice: I live or I die.? It was then that Fonda was able to reinvent herself as an aerobics queen. Since her recovery, Fonda?s name has become synonymous with health and fitness. Fonda has shown that with will and the right treatment, it is possible to recover from an eating disorder at any age.
