Microwave Popcorn in a Bowl and Plate to Reduce Unpopped Kernels

Microwave Popcorn in a Bowl and Plate to Reduce Unpopped KernelsWe've showed you how to make DIY microwave popcorn using a brown paper bag, but you can get just as many rogue unpopped kernels as you can with the commercial product. Household weblog One Good Thing by Jillee recommends making popcorn in a bowl covered with a plate so that it is easy to remove popped kernels and run unpopped kernels through the microwave again.

The key here is to make sure both the bowl and plate are microwave safe. This is not only in consideration of the bowl, but in Jillee's first test batch using a non-microwave safe caused the popcorn to not pop. Try adding one-quarter cup of popcorn kernels for two minutes and forty-five seconds. I like this method because you can buy cheap bulk popcorn, you can precisely control the amount of salt and oil you add, and it results in very few unpopped kernels. Also, take care when you remove the top plate?it can quickly release very hot steam that can burn you if you're not careful.

I'll update after my next batch of popcorn to see if it works better using the heat water first method.
